Celebrating Our Impact During National Volunteer Week

In celebration of National Volunteer Week, we’re shining a spotlight on the heart of our community impact: our dedicated employee volunteers. Since launching our volunteer program in 2022, we’ve seen incredible enthusiasm from our team, and this year, we’re especially proud to highlight two employees who have gone above and beyond.

We sat down with Naea Kaluahine, Credit Review Analyst and Aileen Rizzuto, Settlement Coordinator to talk about their volunteer journeys, what keeps them motivated, and their advice for anyone looking to get involved.

What inspired you to start volunteering, and what keeps you coming back?

Naea: One day, while scrolling through Facebook, I came across a video of a tired, pregnant dog begging for food at a gas station. She looked like she had given up. I couldn’t ignore her, so I reached out to the rescue. A few days later, I picked her up from the airport, and within a week, she had 13 puppies. That experience showed me the profound impact fostering can have, and I’ve been doing it ever since.

Aileen: For me, it’s about gratitude. I’ve been blessed in so many ways, and volunteering is my way of giving back. Knowing that I can make even a small difference in someone’s life keeps me coming back. It’s incredibly rewarding to help others, whether it’s providing support, sharing knowledge, or just making someone’s day a little easier.

Those are such compelling stories! How did you choose the organizations you volunteer for?

Naea:
I chose dog fostering because I saw a real need. So many dogs are abandoned, at risk, or forgotten, and fostering gives them a second chance. When they leave for their new homes, they’re not just getting shelter—they’re becoming someone’s best friend, a source of comfort, and a beloved family member. Seeing that transformation is what keeps me going.

Aileen:
The organizations I support—CAFA Utah, UACC, and some SoFi initiatives—align with my values and commitment to uplifting the community. I believe in their missions and the tangible impact they create. Volunteering isn’t just about giving time; it’s about being part of something bigger than yourself.

Can you share a memorable moment from your volunteer experience?

Naea: Every time I say goodbye to a foster dog, it’s a special moment. People always ask, “Isn’t it hard to let them go?” But to me, that’s the best part. Seeing a once-neglected dog walk away with their new family, knowing they’re about to be loved and cared for, is incredibly rewarding.

Aileen: One of my most memorable moments was during a consular outreach event. I noticed an elderly woman struggling with her passport application, frustrated and unsure of what to do. I stepped in, walked her through the process, and reassured her. It was such a small act, but her gratitude was overwhelming—she was in tears as she thanked me. That moment reaffirmed why I volunteer. Sometimes, the simplest help can mean the world to someone.

What advice would you give to employees who want to get involved but aren’t sure where to start?

Naea: Just start. Find something you care about and take that first step. It doesn’t have to be a huge commitment—small efforts add up to real change.

Aileen: We’re lucky that SoFi gives us 16 volunteer hours each year—use them! Our internal volunteer tool, Benevity, is a great resource for finding organizations that need help. Start small, whether it’s joining a company-led initiative or supporting a cause you care about. Volunteering isn’t about how much time you give; it’s about the willingness to help.

How has volunteering influenced your personal or professional growth?

Naea: Personally, fostering keeps me grounded. It’s a constant reminder of how much kindness and care can change a life.

Aileen: On a personal level, volunteering keeps me centered. Professionally, it’s expanded my network and introduced me to incredible people from all walks of life. The connections I’ve made through volunteering have led to new opportunities and collaborations I never expected.

We’re incredibly grateful for volunteers like Naea and Aileen, whose passion and commitment make a real difference. Their stories remind us that giving back doesn’t just help others—it enriches our own lives, too.

If you’re looking for a way to get involved, start small, follow your passions, and take that first step. Every effort, no matter how big or small, contributes to something greater.

Thank you to all of our volunteers for making an impact in our communities!
