Meet Kiranmai: How Passion For Our Mission Brought Her to SoFi

According to our onboarding and annual engagement surveys, feeling a connection to our mission is one of the top-cited reasons why our employees love working for SoFi. That’s a huge part of why Software Engineering Manager Kiranmai Methukumalli decided to leave a career working for big investment banks and join us in our mission of helping our 4+ million members achieve financial independence.

First, can you tell us three things that others may not know about you?

Kiranmai: I am trained in Indian classical music and I like to do fabric painting when I find some free time. In addition, I enjoy playing legos with my kids.

A creative at heart, I see! So what brought you to SoFi?

Kiranmai: I am excited about helping people achieve their financial independence through the various products offered by SoFi. Having spent most of my career at big investment banks, working at SoFi has been extremely rewarding as I have learned so much in such a short time span.

Nah - you’ve been here for eight months - that’s eight years in fintech terms. All jokes aside, tell us what your ‘SoFi at Work’ team does. How does your work support our mission?

Kiranmai: SoFi at Work is our B2B business channel.  We build financial products that help our business partners serve their employees by providing customized benefits fitting each employee life stage. Employers can choose from a wide range of contributions as well as educational and research-based benefits suitable for their employees. The goal of this platform is to provide new ways for our partners to help their employees Get Their Money Right.

Readers, you can find more information about SoFi at Work here, but here’s the TLDR:

  • More than 1,000 organizations are utilizing SoFi at Work to empower their employees' financial lives - from student loan repayment, tax-deductible contributions to save for college, tuition reimbursement, exclusive perks, and more!
  • SoFi at Work helps energize workforces by helping their employees reach their financial goals. It’s really an extension of SoFi’s mission of helping people achieve financial independence to realize their ambitions.

While we have seen  numbers begin to increase, there still aren’t a lot of women in engineering industry-wide….and especially in leadership positions. What advice do you have for other women in engineering who want to become a leader at their organization?

Kiranmai: A few things have helped me in my career - first, don’t be afraid to raise your hand and take up new challenges. Second, have a support network to help you navigate tough situations. Lastly, acting with integrity and grit helps you own your future.

You oversee a team of engineers and are a hiring manager, so what do you look for when you hire?

Kiranmai: I look for curiosity, a can-do attitude, and a willingness to learn and share knowledge. I am passionate about building diverse and inclusive teams, while creating a culture of learning and experimentation. Our team members have a strong sense of ownership, embody a growth mindset, and pride themselves on a tight collaboration between Product, Design, and Engineering.
