At SoFi, every product we build starts with a simple question: how does this serve our members? When it comes to our technical infrastructure, each product is thoughtfully to function beautifully while also supporting the SoFi community. We sat down with Gaurav Chowdhury, Staff Data Engineer for Data Products to learn more about how his work embodies two of SoFi’s defining core values: putting members' needs first and ferociously running after problems.
The Spark
Gaurav has been with SoFi since 2022, a time when the FinTech industry was experiencing rapid change. SoFi scaled quickly to meet the moment and was seeking a scalable, foundational data platform to support analytics, machine learning, and eventually, AI-driven financial experiences, a challenge Gaurav tackled head on. After contributing to a large-scale data migration, he transitioned to member-facing product development. This pivot not only sparked a true passion in Gaurav, but helped drive the next revolution of SoFi products.
Finding the "Why" in SoFi Relay
One of Gaurav’s most impactful projects was working on SoFi Relay, our financial insights platform that helps members aggregate their accounts and understand their complete financial picture. Relay monitors spending projections, credit score monitoring, debt, auto, and home loan tracking all in one place. The core challenge for Gaurav at Relay was balancing a highly technical infrastructure with its direct impact on human lives. To address this, he redesigned the system's data architecture and rebuilt its data models from the ground up. He knew that finances can be a sensitive subject for people, which meant showing correct data wasn't just a technical requirement, it was a prerequisite for building user trust. Soon after the redesign rolled out, a wave of users shared that they were finally able to see an accurate, reliable financial picture when they connected their data.
Pioneering the Future: The SoFi Coach Program
Following Relay, Gaurav helped build the data and analytics foundation for SoFi Pay, enabling scalable analytics for SoFi's payments platform. That work laid the groundwork for his next challenge—helping power SoFi Coach, the company's AI-driven financial assistant: which is now finally available to members. As SoFi’s first LLM-based product, SoFi Coach uses AI tools to help members actively plan their financial futures. Since Gaurav's previous work helped ensure Relay already securely holds a member's complete financial picture, SoFi Coach can now leverage that data, allowing users to ask deeply personal questions like, “Can I purchase a vehicle?” or “Here are my financial goals, help me create a plan.” By engineering the backend required to deliver this highly personalized, real-time guidance, Gaurav helped create the data & analytics backbone that unlocks financial coaching for members.
The SoFi Way: True End-to-End Collaboration
What makes SoFi different when it comes to data engineers? While data engineers at other companies are typically brought in late in the development cycle, SoFi does things differently. Gaurav’s team is involved right from day one, partnering closely with Product, Data Science, and Engineering teams. This collaborative process is unique to SoFi and is a powerful driving force for future engineers who want to make a real impact. Instead of waiting for a product manager to hand over rigid requirements, engineers are active participants in the development phase—giving ideas, shaping strategy, and directly influencing the product's direction
Building the Future of Fintech
Gaurav’s exceptional work on Relay and SoFi Pay didn’t just impact members; it also marked a massive milestone in his own career, earning him a promotion from Senior to Staff Engineer last year. As he continues to grow, so does his passion for member-facing products and improving the infrastructure of the SoFi products our members use on a daily basis. Ultimately, Gaurav's story is a blueprint for success at SoFi. His journey has made a major impact not just on the products and technology SoFi offers, but it continues to show how empathy and putting himself in the shoes of our members can truly enhance member-facing products. Gaurav is a true leader in committing to the core SoFi values: Run After Problems, Make Your Footprint Bigger Than Your Foot, Iterate, Learn, Innovate, and most importantly, Put Our Members First. With engineers like Gaurav leading the charge from day one, the future of SoFi's digital products is not only scalable and innovative but built entirely on trust. We cannot wait to see how he continues to shape both our data infrastructure and the future of financial engineering in the years to come.
